3. Some of the students from question #1, are considering independent suspension for their version of the Utility Trailer. The system would consist of an axle Shaft, with torsion and loadings as shown in simplified sketch below. (Use Safety Factor of 2 and k-=0.35) a. Determine a suitable shaft size using 1020 Steel with properties as listed below. (show shear and moment diagrams and all calculations) b. Check the natural frequency at 1000 RPM operating speed. Do you think this is acceptable? c. Check the shaft deflection at the critical point (Beam tables on P129-133). Do you think this much deflection will cause an issue with bearing misalignment? d. Without calculating it, do you think Yielding is a probable failure mode for this shaft?
