(b) In construction of a bridge, a hollow steel column is exposed to a compressive load P as shown in Figure 2.2. The Young's Modulus of steel is 200 GPa. The length of the column is 2.43 m with 15.85 cm inner diameter. The load P is identified as 60 N and the maximum compressive stress should be 48 MPa. i. The shortening allowed in the column is 0.5 mm. Estimate the thickness of the column. (8 marks) ii. If a safety factor of 3 is desired, hypothesize the allowable load in the column.
