A pump is to be inserted in a pipeline with a system curve given as HS = Z + C Q2, where Z = 7 m and C = 900 000 m/(m3/s)2 The pump is specified by a suitable operating range of {60 - 180 litres / minute; 12 - 32 m head} when the impeller is rotating at 600 rpm. (a) From the pump specifications derive a performance curve for the pump of the form HP = HO - BQ2. (5) (b) On an Excel sheet, sketch the performance curve of the pump against the flow rate (l/min) and identify the key features of the sketch. (5) Note: the performance curve must be submitted with your solutions. (c) Determine the operating point for the pump installed in the pipeline and estimate the power requirement from the pump if the efficiency is 50%. (5) (d) Given that a change in the rotation rate from 600 rpm to 414 rpm changes the performance curve of the pump, determine the new pump shut-off head. (5) (e) For the reduced rotation pump rate, derive the new pump performance curves if two pumps are connected in series and in parallel (Q in l/min) (5)
