approach, draw up an action plan on how the practice can be
improved further. The plan must include a standard statement.
Examples of areas for reviews:
1. Handovers of shift duty.
2. Fasting times for patients prior to surgery
3. Dealings with complaints from patients
Points to include:
• Identify the problem in clinical areas.
• Give a rationale for improvement using supportive evidence, eg
relevant literature
• Draft a standard setting statement
• Show you have agreed the standard by consulting with your
teams
• Set a deadline for implementation
• Show how you would communicate to others about the standard
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the standard set
