Subsurface transformation and transport A chemical storage facility is suspected of releasing naphthalene into the local aquifer. There is a residential house with a well located 200 m down gradient from the source zone. In addition to underground migration via groundwater flow and dispersion, naphthalene is being biodegraded as it travels through the aquifer. The pertinent data applicable to the fate and transport of naphthalene includes: Groundwater velocity, u = 0.5 m/d Hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient, D = 1.5 m²/d Biodegradation rate K = 0.0062 day1 Concentration of naphthalene at the source (Co) = 10mg/L Complete the following assessment: 1) Determine the concentration of naphthalene (mg/L) at the well using 1D-steady-state- advection-dispersion-adsorption-decay model. 2) The biodegradation rate constant K can be increased by inject nutrient into the groundwater. Determine what K value is needed for the concentration of naphthalene below 0.1mg/L at the well.
