Assignment: Target Company Research Report
This is an individual assignment though it may be worked on with
others. Each student must submit
their individual work.
Background
The axiom 'know your market' is sound and useful counsel
for
building your career. You will need to know your market
throughout your career, and especially at the beginning.
Your
assignment is to select and research one company that
you
would like to work for when you graduate.
There are three major sections of your research: a) the
company,
b) the department or division where you wish to work, and
c)
their needs and requirements. The report should be five to ten
pages in length with proper citations and
bibliography. Your papers are required to have a minimum of three
sources cited in the content and
listed in your bibliography. The style and format of the
bibliography and citations is MLA7, and you are
advised to use the References tab in Word to make these entries
correctly. See this link for help
creating Word Citations and Bibliographies.
Objectives
• The Company (30 points): In this section provide the following
information about the company:
o Name, location, headquarters location, what the company does and
how it makes its
money or value, and how it is regarded in the market.
o The financial performance of the company: Is it publicly traded?
What was its revenue
or value in the last three years (if not a business, then state
this in appropriate terms).
o Using Porter's Five Forces, analyze the company's competitive
position. Rate each force
from 1-5 where 5 is a strong force, and explain your rating.
Conclude with your analysis
of the company's current competitive standing and future.
• The Department/Division You Want to Join (30 points): In this
section provide the following
information about your target department or division:
o Where does the group report on the company organization chart and
is there a Senior
Officer at the head?
o How many different functions and service groups are there in the
IT organization?
o How many employees work in the organization?
o What is the name and contact data for the head of the
organization and if possible, the
managers who directly report to the head?
o Does the organization provide their services from only in-house
efforts, or do they use
outside providers? If they do use outsiders, what is the largest
one they use?
o What are some of the most interesting job positions they have
that you might want to
do? What is the general compensation package for these
positions?
2
• The Needs and Requirements (40 points): In this section provide
the best information you can
research and discover about the following:
o What are the talents, skills, and competencies that the target
organization needs?
o What credentials are required or highly desirable?
o What experience is required and in what areas of computing?
o What are some of the big projects the organization is working on
currently, and what do
they plan?
o What are their big problems? Their ongoing challenges?
This is an individual assignment though it may be worked on with
others. Each student must submit
their individual work.
