A researcher wants to know whether drinking a warm glass of milk before going to bed improves REM sleep. They measure the duration of REM sleep in 50 people after drinking 8 ounces of water, and another 50 people after drinking 8 ounces of warm milk. They find that people who drank the water had on average M=84 minutes of REM sleep, and people who drank a glass of warm milk had M - 81 minutes of REM sleep. The researcher uses statistics and concludes that this 3- minute disadvantage for warm milk is not significant, at p> 0.001 one-tailed.
