Two physics students, Nick and Zach, are completing a lab onheat transfer. The lab gives them 2 blocks of equal mass: one iswooden and one is aluminum. Both students pick up the blocks to putthem on the lab desk in front of them for an experiment. Bothstudents notice that the metal block felt colder than the woodenblock. A small amount of ice (10 g) is placed on each block. Thestudents measure room temperature to be 21 degrees Celsius and usea stopwatch to measure how long it takes for the ice to completelymelt. Nick is in charge of monitoring the metal block and Zach isin charge of monitoring the wooden block. The results are givenbelow:
Nick measures the metal block ice melts in 54seconds.
Zach measures the wooden block ice melts in 230seconds.
After watching the ice melt, Nick says, "I thought the metalblock was colder. I wonder why the ice melted so fast. It feltcolder to me."
Why does the metal block melt the ice faster than the woodenblock?
And why does the metal block feel colder than the woodenblock before the experiment with ice?
