5PH4U: Physies, Grade 12, Universäty Preparation Unit 2: Energy and Momentum Activity 3: Conservation of Energy Problems Dverview | Expectations | Content | Assignment Assignment Derive expressions for the following scenarios: leave everything in variables (do not plug in sample numbers) Scenario 1: A block of mass m is dropped from rest down a ramp of height h1 with co-efficient of kinetic friction μk, length of ramp d1, and angle of inclination θ. The block continues along a horizontal distance d2 with the same co-efficient of kinetic friction. Calculate d2 in terms of the other parameters (use d1 instead of h). Assume the block comes to rest along d2. Scenario 2: A block of mass m is dropped from rest down a ramp of height h1 with co-efficient of kinetic friction μk, length of ramp d1, and angle of inclination θ. When the block reaches the bottom it immediately climbs a second ramp with no friction. Find the maximum height h2 that the block will reach in terms of the other parameters. (use d1 instead of h) Scenario 3: A pendulum of mass m is pushed from an initial speed of v1 and allowed to swing to the other side until it comes to rest (the first time). The pendulum is initially displaced by an angle θ relative the the vertical. The length of the pendulum is I. Find the maximum height that the pendulum will reach relative to the lowest position of the pendulum in terms of the other parameters.
