Aisyah and Zairi are post-graduates in Management under
different streams from the same university. They have been good
friends since their college days. The same friendship continues in
the workplace as they are employees of the same company, Bersepadu
Sdn. Bhd. Aisyah is placed in HR department as employee counselor
and Zairi is in finance department as the key finance executive. As
per the salary grade is concerned both are at the same level. But
in terms of responsibility, Zairi being in core finance, holds more
responsibility.
By nature, Aisyah is friendly, bubbly, and ready to help. On the
other hand, Zairi is a quiet person, but he is always ready to help
if approached personally. However, he is a bit egoistic. They have
successfully completed five years in the organisation and the
senior management is very satisfied with both of them as they are
equally talented and constant performers.
Recently, Aisyah feels that Zairi is not like as he used to be. She
notices some change of behavior. For example, during general
conversations, she feels that Zairi is teasing her by suggesting
that she is famous among the employees in the organisation, while
he is not even recognised by fellow employees.
One morning, Mr. Farid the Managing Director of Bersepadu Sdn.
Bhd. is shocked when he receives an email from Zairi about his
resignation. Mr. Farid immediately called Aisyah and discussed
about the email as she is close to Zairi. When Aisyah hears the
news, she was stunned and said she was not aware of it.
In the afternoon, Mr. Farid invited Zairi to have lunch together
and started the conversation with a general discussion. He then
asks Zairi about his intention to resign. Zairi, after some
hesitations opened up to Mr. Farid. The problem with Zairi are; 1)
when he comes alone to the canteen, he is hardly recognised or
noticed by others. But if he is accompanied by Aisyah, he receives
well treatment by others; 2) one day both of them entered the
office together. The security at the entrance gate wished them but
the next day when he came alone, the same security did not do so;
3) even in the meetings held in the office, the points raised by
Aisyah received more value. So, most of the time he will just keep
quiet in the meetings.
Zairi is disturbed by the degradation he has to face each day at
work. He also questions that "Aisyah and I have the same
qualification, from the same university and passed in the same year
with first class honor. We have the same number of experiences in
the organisation. Moreover, my responsibilities are more valuable
than Aisyah. After all this thing, if I am being ignored and
unrecognised by the fellow employees, my ego does not allow me to
continue here".
Based on Zairi's explanation, Mr. Farid feels that it is not
going to be very difficult to stop Zairi's resignation. Mr. Farid
then explained to Zairi the reasons for such partial behavior of
the employees. Zairi apologised for his reaction and was ready to
withdraw his resignation. He even called up Aisyah and speak to her
like before.
a. Explain the root-cause of Zairi's problem.
b. If you are Mr. Farid, recommend and explain TWO (2) ways
that can be implemented to overcome Zairi's disappointment, which
at the same time can lead to a conducive and cheerful working
environment among all employees.
c. Based on ONE (1) of your suggestions in Question 2,
explain how the method improves job retention.
