Heat 2 double bonds + 1 double bond OCH 3 CO2CH3 A B C Figure Q21a (a) Draw the structures of the starting materials A and B used to make it and label them according to their respective roles in the reaction. (4 marks) (b) Draw the geometrical isomer, D, of the starting material B. (1 mark) (c) Assign the cis/trans geometry labels to B and D, explaining your reasoning. (3 marks) (d) In the above reaction with A, would the geometrical isomer D yield the same Diels-Alder product as B does, i.e. would you still get product C? Justify your answer (no scheme/mechanism required). (2 marks)
