3. Homework #1, Qu (1 point) The ancient Greek astronomer Eratosthenes accurately estimated the size of Earth using only a tall monument, a shadow, a deep well, and a known distance between two cities. Let's explore part of that calculation here. After seeing how fast we can move simply by being on Earth, we'll put Earth into context by seeing how much smaller Earth is than the Sun is. Hint: This question involves scientific notation. Have you reviewed the relevant lecture slides on Canvas? A You observe that at a particular time of day on a particular day of the year, the Sun is directly overhead in Syene, a city in Egypt (which was part of ancient Greece). But at the same time in Alexandria, another Egyptian city almost due north, the Sun is 7.14° away from being directly overhead. What fraction of a full 360° circle is this angle? B. You measure the distance between these two cities to be 493 mi (miles), which means that this distance is the same fraction of Earth's circumference as you found in part 2A. (Recall that the circumference is the distance around the edge of a circle.) We might be able to see this relationship better as an equation: 493 mi your fraction from part 2A с or, equivalently: 493 mi your fraction from part 2A C=
