Prelab Name Class Section Answer these questions before coming to the lab and turn in your answers at the beginning of the lab to get credit. Turning this pre lab question sheet later would result in not getting any credit for the pre lab. Period T is defined as the time required for an object with mass M attached to a spring of spring constant k to complete one cycle of motion (one oscillation). T=2M where M= mass attached to the spring (in kg), kespring constant (in N/m) and Tæperiod of time to complete one cycle of its motion in s). 1. Show a free body diagram of a vertical spring with a mass attached, while in equilibrium. 2. If you cut the spring by one third, would the period be longer or shorter? By how much? Explain your answer. Hint: read on your textbook how the spring constant depends on the length. 3. Does a stiffer spring (stiffer spring has higher spring constant) give a longer or shorter period? Explain your answer. 4. If you quadruple the attached mass, how much does the period T change? Show your work 5. If we let the spring oscillate 40 times and measure the time, what is the period T of the oscillation? Explain your answer.
