Please help me on this experiment, thank you. I know that thetemperature increase. The experiment is described as followed:
Thermogenesis: Examine the plunger and tube apparatus. Theplastic outer tube is just to support the inner tube, where theaction of the experiment occurs. Use the wire to put a very, very, small piece of cotton in the bottom of the inner tube. Pull thecotton apart before you push it down the tube to increase it’ssurface area. Put the inner tube back into the outer tube, put thered outer tube cap back on the outer tube. Set the plunger in theinner tube a small amount, less than two centimeters. Take theapparatus next door where the lights can be turned off for theexperiment. Once the lights are out, press the plunger down veryquickly, almost to the point of slamming it with your hand. Ifnothing notable occurs, reset the setup and try again until youobserve an illuminating event. If the bottom of the inner tube isblackened, due to the build up of coke, use the pipe cleaner toremove the coke and return the setup to it’s initial state for thenext group.
1: Describe what you observed in this experiment and howthermodynamics is relevant. Sketch drawings or graphs if they aidin your description. 2: Was there any thermodynamic state variable(s) that stayedconstant during the experiment. Explain. 3: How did changes in the thermodynamic state variableseffect the bonds in the cotton? What role did the cotton play inthis experiment? 4: Did heat transfer into the tube from outside the tubeduring the very rapid compression of the plunger? How about frominside? Explain.
