2. An ingenious device that illustrates conservation of momentum and kinetic energy. It consists of five identical hard balls supported by strings of equal lengths. When ball 1 is pulled out and released, after the almost-elastic collision between it and ball 2, ball 1 stops and ball 5 moves out. If balls 1 and 2 are pulled out and released, they stop after the collision and balls 4 and 5 swing out, and so forth.
