Butane gas is highly flammable and is often used as a fuel. (a) Write a balanced equation, including the state symbols, for the reaction of butane, C4H10, when burned in excess oxygen. (2 marks) (b) Use the bond energy data from the Data Booklet to calculate the enthalpy change of combustion of butane. (3 marks) (c) In an experiment to determine the standard enthalpy of combustion for butane, 0.517g of butane was burned in excess oxygen. The heat produced is able to increase the temperature of 100 mL water from 27∘C to 77∘C. Calculate the standard enthalpy change of combustion for butane. (3 marks) (d) State ONE (1) possible reason for the difference in your answers in (b) and (c). Suggest a solution to overcome this difference in values. (2 marks) Maximum size for new files: 20MB
