What is the energy required to break a carbon-carbon double bond(C=C) if the reaction: C3H6 +H2 àC3H8 has an overallreaction enthalpy of -126 kJ/mol. During the course of thisreaction, 1 C=C bond and 1 H-H (436 kJ/mol) bond is broken in thereactants while 1 C-C bond (346 kJ/mol) and 2 C-H bonds (413kJ/mol) are formed in the products. Remember, when energy isreleased from a system, the sign of enthalpy is negative.
