Hector Berlioz created a masterpiece called SymphonieFantastique. It included a program which tells us the story behindthe piece. Hector Berlioz fell in love with a woman by the name ofHarriet Smithson at the age of 23. This piece was written to getthe attention of Harriet Smithson to convince her to marry and bewith him.
I feel the advantage of knowing the program prior to listeningto the piece, is that you can envision the whole story, all whilelistening. It is like watching a movie in your mind. It gives adescription of what you should be listening for. An example islistening to his Fifth movement called “Dream of a Witches’Sabbath.” You can kind of picture what is going on with the ghoulsand witches dancing and that there is a funeral that is going totake place. Having a program for a musical piece ignites the mindof the listener to visualize what the composer wants. Kind of likea book. You read the descriptions of what the author wants you tovisualize while the story unfolds.
A disadvantage to me would be that you are not able to useyour complete imagination while listening to the piece. If the composer doesn’t give the description of what he wants youto imagine, you could listen and enjoy the composition many timesto come up with different stories of what it could be about whichwould leave the listener guessing.
