The Millenium Falcon spaceship was flying above the surface of the planet Alderaan when it was travelling at a horizontal speed of 2040 m/s. To descend to the Alderaan's surface, theMillenium Falcon needed to reduce its speed using its rocket, as shown in FIGURE 7 FIGURE 7 a. The average thrust from the rocket was 30kN, and the mass of the Millenium Falcon was 15100 kg. Calculate the horizontal deceleration of the Millenium Falcon. b. The rocket was then used to control the velocity of descent so that the Millenium Falcondescended vertically with a constant velocity, as shown in FIGURE 8. Due to the useof fuel during the previous deceleration, the mass of the Millenium Falcon had fallen by 53%. (acceleration due to gravity near the Alderaan's surface =1.61 ms−2 ) FIGURE 8 i.
