The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was considered one of the worstnuclear accidents of our time. The explosionand resulting fire in reactor #4 destroyed the nuclear fuelrods, releasing thousands of curies of radioactive materialsincluding 131I and theactinides 239Pu and 241Am. After 30years, the so-called "exclusion zone" around the reactor and thetown of Pripyat is still uninhabitable. The incidence of cancerssuch as leukemia and thyroid cancers are still much higher thannormal. Read through the IAEA document, and then go on to read thetwo recent articles. One carries some bad news about thepossibility of yet another explosion, and the other provides somegood news, saying that no excess mutations were found in thechildren of the survivors of Chernobyl.
