2.3 (a) Using your own sketches explain the distinguishing characteristics between the Lap-joint and Butt-joint Bearing-type connections based on the following: (i) Structural configuration (ii) Load transfer mechanism 10 marks (iii) Stability under loading (b) The butt-joint connection shown in Fig. 3 comprises 3/4" inch A325 bolts (Ag​=0.44 in 2 ) The steel plates are 1/2 inch (sides) and 3/4 inch (centre) A36( Fy​=36ksi and Fu​=58 ksi,Fav​=68ksi. The applied lateral loads are dead PD​=100kips and Live PL​=150 kips. Assuming 1/8-inch bolt-hole tolerance: (i) Determine whether the connection is adequate for the ultimate loads. (ii) Determine the number of bolts required for a safe connection 20 marks END OF TEST
