Unrestrained Beam The simply supported beam shown on figure Q2 is to be designed for a central point load, P, made up of 90kN of dead load and 25kN of floor imposed load (the dead load value includes a conservative allowance for the beam's own self-weight). The supports and the location of the point load all provide lateral and torsional support but do not restrain the flanges from rotation on-plan. The beam is to support brittle finishes. Choose a suitable S275 Universal Beam, making full use of the Eurocode 3 member capacities section of P363, rather than calculating capacities by hand using Code clauses, to satisfy both Ultimate and Serviceability Limit States (ULS and SLS). The central deflection of such a beam, with a central point load P is given by PL3/48El. Please note that in this question you are being examined on your ability to use the pink pages member capacities part of P363, and marks will not be given for performing calculations by direct application of code clauses instead.
