b) A bridge, which resembles a vertical curve is to be built across a river as shown in Figure 1 . The designed rising and falling gradients are +5% and −6% respectively. The tangent points are at chainages 1+500 m and 1+800 m. The chainage and reduced level of the intersection point of the two gradients being 1+650 m and 27.550 m respectively. In order to obtain the necessary headroom for vessel to pass under the proposed bridge, the reduced level of the curved bridge at chainage 1+680 m on the down gradient side of the intersection point is to be 22.750 m. Determine: i. The Reduced levels and chainage of the highest point on the bridge, (11 marks) ii. The reduced levels of the proposed bridge at chainages 1+600 m,1+660 m,1+700 m,1+740 m and 1+780 m.
