Question 1 (25 marks) (a) Explain the concept of velocity boundary layer and its importance in Fluid Mechanics (5 marks) (b) Air at a temperature of 15∘C and mean velocity of 6 m/s is blown over a 150 mm long flat plate with a surface temperature of 550∘C. At the mean film temperature, Pr=0.683,k=44.23×10−3 W/mK and v=46.35×10−6 m2/s (i) Calculate the average convection heat transfer coefficient over the whole length of the plate (10 marks) (ii) Calculate the rate of heat transfer by convection from one side of the plate to the air, per meter width of the plate over the whole length of the plate.
