Let's say I would like to pump 300 gpm of sea water to a tank 800 m away. There is a steady gradient between the points with a total elevation of 5 m. I plan to use a stainless steel pipe, schedule 40, with a 5" nominal diameter (see table below). I will need 100 threaded unions, two threaded 45 degree elbows, a shut-off valve (i.e. ball valve), and a fully open gate valve. The seawater will enter the piping system through a well-rounded inlet. The water intake is close to the surface and the tank is vented to the atmosphere. 1. Determine the required head the pump must supply to the system. 2. Using the pump chart provided, which impeller size would you recommend? -3. How much power would the pump draw? Now let's think about pump placement. I need to make sure I do not have cavitation. I would also like to avoid placing the pump on the beach. See if either of these options is viable: A. Place the pump right before the tank fi.e.5 m elevation and at the end of the 800 m of pipe and all the fittings). B. Place the pump half way along the length of the pipe. (You may assume 2.5 m elevation and total head losses are half of those in scenario A.)
