A certain pile has a mean capacity of 800 kN as computed with design method A. A statisti- cal analysis of a number of piles designed with this method indicates that the Cov for this method is 0.45. The downward demand placed on this pile has a mean value of 250 KN. Based on loads in similar applications, the COV of the demand is estimated to be 0.27. Compute the factor of safety, based on mean values, and the probability of failure of this pile assuming ca- pacity and demand are independent and normally distributed.
