A stainless steel 304 sheet that is 1/8" thick is used to build
a tank that will contain an aggressive solution that may cause
pitting corrosion. Based on the information provided in the figure
where D=1/16" answer
1) What will be the maximum amount of SS
in ft2 that you could use in the tank to have 90% confidence that
no leaks will occur when a service life of 10 years is
reached.
2) What would be the probability of
finding pits with a depth equal to half the thickness of the SS
sheet, if the internal area of the tank is twice that
in (1).
3) What would be the probability of
finding pits 1/16" deep if a cubic tank 2x2x2 ft is built (no
lid).
