Winter's Bone Theme Essay
Throughout the novel Ree is connected to the natural world
around her. Where in her journey does Ree rely on,
engage with or learn from nature? How does nature
become a companion on her journey? Choose at least 4 of
these moments from the novel to discuss. Finally suggest
what Woodrell might be saying about human's connection to
nature.
Analyze how the story expresses the
theme. Analysis is, by definition, taking something
apart to examine how the individual parts relate to one another and
function within the whole. The whole for this paper is
the theme. You need to analyze how the individual parts
express the theme. For each of the literary element
parts, look at the following questions:
Setting - What are
the settings and how do they
help to illustrate the theme of the story?
Character - What do the
characters do or say that helps
to illustrate the idea in each theme?
Plot -
What events take place in the
work which help to illustrate this idea?
Symbol - What are
the objects, things, places, or
actions in the story that help to illustrate its
theme?
Create an argument
based on what the general theme of the story is and how the theme
is reflected through ONE OR TWO of the elements listed
above.
EXAMPLE THESIS
STATEMENT
"Two Kinds" is a story
about a mother and daughter relationship. The connection
between daughter and mother is fraught with strife and
consternation, yet the story strives to express something beyond
this common family turmoil. The everlasting power of the
family relationship is at the heart of this story, and no matter
how hard Jing Mei tries to break from her mother's
expectation, in the end her connection to her mother is only more
firmly cemented in both characters lives. This theme of
strong family bonds can be found both in the character actions as
well as symbolic items within the story.
