The Project: A company owns and runs ten shops throughout
Ireland. It also franchises its business model, with a dozen
franchisees selling under its brand name in other areas in Ireland.
Management has decided to expand internationally to England. It has
not, however, decided whether to expand with owner operated
outlets or with franchising (or possibly both). Management
of the company has decided to issue a tender for a consultant’s
report on the preferred organisational form for its expansion. You
are working for one of the consultant firms tendering. Your boss
asks you to write up the tender.
As a first step, you are asked to submit to your boss a summary
of the salient issues you propose to address in the tender, and
because like all bosses, your boss is busy, do so in less than 1000
words.
points to note:
1. In this exercise, you have a chain of sandwich shops whose
owners want to expand into Northern Ireland and Scotland. That
decision is done and dusted. They are not looking for
advice on whether to expand; they are looking for advice on how to
expand, whether to expand with manager run operations or to
franchise or some combination.
2. Your hypothetical consulting firm bids on the tender. The bid
includes, for example, a price for the job and a proposal on how
they will come up with advice for the client.
3. For the project, I am interested only in the first step,
which is gathering together the salient issues that will need to be
addressed to come up with advice. Gathering together the salient
issues means asking what questions will need to be answered, what
facts will need to be gathered. A full tender, which you are not
asked to do here, would involve saying how you would answer these
questions.
It would be great if you could please help me answer this
assignment and give some some
direction.
