For this discussion topic, 1. define a function (could be just in words but the use of constants, coefficients, and variables is okay, too). (5 points) 2. Most importantly, describe what application(s) your formula may have in our lives, and indicate why. (5 points) For example, I'm a SD Padres baseball fan and I'd like to know what the opposing team's OPS (On-base percentage Plus Slugging percentage) is on a two-strike count. OPS is an important analytic that many teams use to gauge their run production. If this OPS analytic is too high (say above 80% whenever the Padres' pitcher already has a two-strike count against the opposing batter), then the pitching coach may want to alert his pitchers of a mitigating strategy (such as using fewer fastballs in this situation). If the coach can find an effective strategy, then that should be reflected in a higher winning percentage over a season of 162 games. The coach may want to collect data over the season to test the hypothesis that this strategy is working, that is, the new strategy results in a gain in wins (and possibly a play-off spot at the end of the season).
