P. vulgaris produces hydrogen sulfide in the KIA test, which can sometimes make it difficult to see whether the dextrose and lactose are fermented. Based on its phenol red broth test results, what color would you expect the butt and slant of the P. vulgaris KIA tube to look like if we left out the sodium thiosulfate and ferrous sulfate ingredients? Why do you expect them to look this way?
