Heating a solution containing Fe2(CO)9 and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) leads to the formation of Fe(CO)4PPh3. The infrared spectrum of this product exhibits three Fe CO infrared absorptions at 2051,1978 and 1945 cm−1. Two structures are possible for Fe(CO)4PPh3,(A or B ) as depicted below. (i) Determine the point groups to which structures A and B belong: (ii) Calculate the number of C-O stretching absorptions expected for each structure; (iii) Using these data suggest the structure (A or B) for the experimentally observed Fe(CO)4PPh3 species.
