Question 2 (Answer ALL parts):
1. Outline the formulation characteristics of Travatan®
(travoprost) eye drops and explain the likely reason for
formulating travoprost in this formulation type. (2 marks)
2. Currently available Travatan® formulation is considered safer
than the original travapost formulation that contained benzalkonium
chloride (BAK). Explain the likely reason(s) for this improved
safety profile of the new travapost formulation. (2 marks)
3. As per reported pharmacokinetic properties, highest
concentration of travaprost is found in the cornea, conjunctiva,
aqueous humour and iris ciliary body 0.5 to 2 hours after topical
instillation. In addition, systemic exposure of travoprost is low
(below levels of quantification). Explain the likely reasons for
these pharmacokinetic properties of Travatan® eye drops. Your
answer should include a discussion of the ocular drug absorption
pathways following topical instillation. (5 marks)
4. Ozurdex® is an ocular implant that is used for the treatment
of diabetic macular edema. Explain the role of ocular implants and
how active ingredient (dexamethasone) is released from Ozurdex®
implant. (5 marks)
