Read the passage below:
Critics of the mental health profession sometimes argue thatthe diagnosis of
schizophrenia is nothing more than the “medicalization ofdeviation.” This term
implies that individuals who are simply different incharacter and behavior from
most members of society are labeled as schizophrenic.Advocates of this position
argue that a person’s belief that he is a historical figuresuch as Abraham
Lincoln, or a religious figure such as Moses, does no harmto anyone else. Thus, he should be allowed to livehis life as he pleases and not be pressured to take
antipsychotic drugs that will cause him to abandon hisdelusions. Most mental
health professionals defend the schizophrenia diagnosis, andthe use of
antipsychotic drugs, with the argument that schizophrenia isa real, neurological
disorder. They say that treatment, even if administeredinvoluntarily, is justified
because a person who is out of touch with reality cannotfunction effectively in
society.
*The Affirmative Position.Specifically formulate a response in favor of maintaining clinicaldiagnoses and drug treatment of schizophrenia.
*The NegativePosition. Specifically, formulate aresponse that agrees with the position that thediagnosis of schizophrenia “… is nothing more than the“medicalization of deviation.”
Both positions responses need to address the following:
-What are the symptoms of schizophrenia?
-Should those that have been clinically diagnosed withschizophrenia be pressured or forced to take antipsychotic drugs? Why or why not?
-Provide 2-4 arguments to support your position on bothpositions.
