The shape of a river channel is affected by the velocity of thewater. The velocity of the water varies or changes indifferent parts of the channel. Generally, faster flowingwater cuts a deeper channel. Slower moving water erodes lessand sediment starts to deposit.
Figure 1, below, gives depth measurements at 2 locations, A-Aand B-B, at different places along the river. The depthmeasurements were taken at the site marked on the river channel inFigure 1. Plot the data on the graphs (you do not have to addanything ore to the table in Figure 1).
Plot the data for each of the 2 locations. Connectthe points to illustrate the cross-sectional shape of the riverchannel at locations A-A and B-B. Use the graphs to answerthe following questions.

a. Draw a cross sectional view of what you think the channelshape would be at C-C (Hit: the river curves opposite of A-A)
b. Look at line A-A: At which spot in the channel is the rivervelocity the greatest?
c. At which spot I the channel is the river velocity the slowestalong line A-A?
d. Look at line B-B: locate the spots with the slowest andfastest velocity.
Slowest____________ Fastest_______________
e. Do the same for line C-C.
Slowest _______________ Fastest ______________
f. At which spot would you expect to find the most depositionalong A-A?
