A cell in which the Iron Response Element Binding Protein (IRE-BP), also known as "aconitase," is defective and no longer binds to RNA will: Forever be trying to pump iron into the cell, even when there's enough around. Forever be trying to store iron away in the "sequestration" protein, even when it needs the iron for its apoproteins. Will properly regulate iron, pumping it in when needed, and storing it when it has too much. Never pump in iron, even if its available outside the cell and needed inside the cell. Never store/sequester excess iron, even after it accumulates to a toxically high level.
