Part 2: Two Bar Magnets with Common Central Poles Mapping 16 Remove your previous drawing from the table or desktop and tape an 8.5x14" sheet of clean white paper in its place. 17 Place two bar magnets at the center of the paper, separated by approximately 5 cm, aligned such that the north magnetic poles face each other, as shown in Figure 14. N NS Figure 14. Magnet configuration on the paper with both magnetic north poles toward the center. 18 Tape both magnets to the paper so they do not move. 19 Outline the bar magnets with a pencil and mark the orientation of their north and south magnetic poles on the sheet of paper. 20 Place the compass approximately 3 cm above the center point of the two magnets and mark the position of the tip and tail of the compass. 21 Repeat steps 6-12. Note: The compass needle may not move significantly as it approaches the magnets. Test the direction of the magnetic field by slightly moving the compass to the left and right. If the line splits to connect to both magnets, draw each of the paths. 22 Repeat steps 20-21 for a position 3 cm below the center point of the two magnets 23 Repeat steps 5-14 for each magnet until there are six magnetic field lines around each magnet, for a total of 12 lines. Note: Draw an equal amount of lines above and below each magnet. 24 Mark and label the position of weakest (zero) magnetic field. 25 Write your name and the date on your magnetic field lines drawing, take a photo, and upload the image in Photo 2.
