Following a pilot study with a survey, researchers are exploring the relationship of prosocial behavior & health & well being. One feature of prosocial behavior is that it can generate positive emotions which are believed to have beneficial effects on health. To explore this relationship, the researchers design a study in which the participants are randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups that vary in prosocial activity (ACTIVITY): 1-a group that has no specific intervention (control), 2-a group that is instructed to engage in positive emotional thoughts for one month; and 3-a group that works with a specific volunteer group for 5 hours a week for a month. The following information was collected: Age: recorded in the number of years of age reported on the survey; Gender: male (1) or female (2) as reported on the survey Health rating (Hrate): This is a composite of several measures of health including BMI, heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol & triglycerides; and lung function. It is on a 0 (very poor health) to 100 (excellent health). Most physicians agree that a rating of 30 on this scale warning sign of serious health issues and a rating of 50 is acceptable health. This data is collected at the beginning of the study (Hratel) and at the end of the study (Hrate 2) Wellness rating (Wrate): Participants are asked to rate themselves in terms of how they are feeling health wise over the last week. This wellness rating is on a 0 (I feel terrible & am worried about my health) to 10 (I feel tremendous & I am in great shape). Physicians recognize that a rating of 3 or lower indicates that follow up measures should be taken and a rating of 6 or better indicates individuals have a positive sense of wellness. Data is collected at the beginning of the study (Wratel) & at the end of the study (Wrate2) Subject A B C D E F G H I J K L M N 0 P Q R S T U V W X Gender 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 1.00 2.00 Age 43.00 54.00 53.00 53.00 54.00 52.00 53.00 56.00 46.00 49.00 53.00 54.00 55.00 52.00 52.00 56.00 42.00 55.00 54.00 57.00 50.00 50.00 54.00 51.00 ACTIVITY 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 2.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 Hratel 76.00 54.00 63.00 43.00 67.00 81.00 34.00 53.00 45.00 66.00 59.00 63.00 72.00 72.00 49.00 49.00 47.00 46.00 75.00 70.00 34.00 58.00 63.00 77.00 Hrate2 75.00 56.00 64.00 43.00 68.00 80.00 30.00 55.00 46.00 65.00 66.00 65.00 76.00 73.00 51.00 50.00 52.00 54.00 82.00 71.00 47.00 65.00 69.00 85.00 Wratel 4.00 3.00 6.00 5.00 4.00 6.00 3.00 3.00 3.00 5.00 6.00 7.00 5.00 4.00 5.00 4.00 5.00 5.00 8.00 7.00 3.00 6.00 6.00 7.00 Wrate2 6.00 4.00 6.00 5.00 7.00 7.00 1.00 4.00 2.00 6.00 7.00 8.00 7.00 5.00 4.00 4.00 6.00 8.00 9.00 9.00 6.00 8.00 7.00 8.00
