A beam spans 5000mm and carries a distributed load of 50 000 MPa or N/mm2. The wood beam is b=200 mm and d=700mm. Calculate the magnitude of the maximum moment acting in the beam. (Use the Beam loading tables posted - 5 marks.) Using your answer for the maximum moment, calculate the maximum stress in the beam. (Remember: the Moment of Inertial for a rectangular cross section is bd3/12. Keep careful track of the units!) Mmax = wl2 / 12 w = load 1 = length f = Mmax (h/2)/bd3/12
