(1 point) The BCS ranking system was more complicated in 2001 than in 2008. The table below gives the BCS rankings at the end of the regular season. (A lower BCS Index gave a higher rank.) Table headings: • AP and USA gives the rank of each team in two opinion polls of writers and coaches, respectively. • SS stands for strength of schedule ranking, with 1 being the most challenging. • Lis the number of losses during the season. • CA (Computer Average) is the average of computer rankings from various sources. • QW (Quality Wins) gives a measurement of the number of victories over highly ranked teams. AP USA SSL 1 1 17 0 4 4 12 1 3 3 CONNE 2 2 5 2 2 29 1 192 33 2 21 3 5 7 23 7 Rank Team 1 Miami 2 Nebraska 3 Colorado 4 Oregon 5 Florida 6 Texas 7 Washington 8 Tennessee 9 Oklahoma 10 Maryland 11 Stanford 12 Illinois 13 Washington St 14 LSU 15 South Carolina CA 0.91 2.22 4.56 4.76 5.72 6.75 14.79 6.17 9.01 11.38 7.75 9.7 10.81 8 QW BCS Index 0.2 2.51 0.6 7.16 2.1 7.34 0.5 8.75 0.8 13.33 1.1 25.30 1 38.07 1.5 47.76 0.9 62.48 0 64.74 1.2 66.05 0 79.99 0.4 86.27 1 103.67 0 151.29 5 24 8 10 6 2 10 6 11 11 36 2 72 1 23 2 37 1 492 7 7 13 13 12 14 12 14 11 3 40 3 13 19 Find a formula for the 2001 BCS ranking. (Instructions: What you are expected to do is choose the data from 6 of the schools to form a system of 6 equations in 6 unknowns X1, 12,...,16. Normally one might think the best idea would be to choose the six top schools but if you try that it will not work because the coefficients for the 21 and 22 are the same for each of the six schools, and thus Gaussian Elimination leads to 0= 1, which is absurd. So use the first five schools and Washington and you will be able to obtain a unique solution.) BCS Index = (AP) + (USA) + (SS) + (L) + (CA) + (QW)
