Problem 9 4 points possible (graded) A long straight wire lies between two uncharged capacitor plates of area 0.9m² and spacing 2m. The wire is oriented along the x-axis and a conventional current 2A runs through the wire in the + direction. At a particular instant, an electron traveling in the + direction with speed 3m/s passes a distance 0.4m above the center of the wire. Assume this distance is much less than the length of the wire. Top plate Bottom plate (a) Calculate the force on the electron at this instant. N positive (b) This experiment is now repeated with charged plates and the electron is observed to travel in a straight line at a constant speed. Determine the magnitude of the charge of the plates. negative I с wire (c) What is the sign of the charge on the top plate from part (b)? N (d) How would your answer to part (a) change if the charged particle (the electron) were replaced with a proton?
