A pump takes water at 70°F from a large reservoir and delivers it to the bottom of an open elevated tank through a 3-in Schedule 40 pipe. The inlet to the pump is located 12 ft. below the water surface, and the water level in the tank is constant at 150 ft. above the reservoir surface. The suction line consists of 120 ft. of 3-in Schedule 40 pipe with two 90° elbows and one gate valve, while the discharge line is 220 ft. long with four 90° elbows and two gate valves. Installed in the line is a 2-in diameter orifice meter connected to a manometer with a reading of 40 in Hg. (a) What is the flow rate in gal/min?
