question as historians generally agree that the war was not "necessary." However, a number of states declared war on each other after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The leaders of each of the states that declared war must have felt that war was necessary. Your assignment is to determine why this was so. You have multiple sources to provide you with the "facts," our textbook, four videos, and my online lecture. Each of these sources attempt to answer why each of these states decided on war in August 1914. But these sources do not agree with each other, they emphasize different factors, have differing interpretations. Your goal in this assignment is to provide a convincing answer why the three belligerent powers you chose believed war was necessary in August 1914. You need to review all of the material, take notes, and consider the differing interpretations before you formulate your answer. Your paper must be double-spaced in a 12-point font, 750 to 1,000 words. File type must be .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .txt. Upload the final version through Canvas. You must give your paper a title that reflects your argument and prepares the reader for what is to follow. Take advantage of the Writing Center to submit a draft version of your paper. They can detect possible plagiarism issues and help with developing a more effective writing style. Do not open your paper with "background" or "introduction." In the opening paragraph clearly and directly state your thesis or argument on why these three states chose war in August 1914. You cannot write this potion until you have determined the answer for each state you will examine. What you might think of as your "conclusion" should open your paper. In a final paragraph state if you think any lessons can be drawn from the outbreak of World War I.
