Exercise I In order to reduce the deflection of the steel I-beam cantilever shown, a support is to be added at S. Moment of Inertia / = 10-8m², Modulus of Elasticity of steel E = 2.07. 10¹¹ Pa 500 mm 5 kN 300 mm- S Neglecting the shear stresses: 1. What vertical force at S is needed to reduce the deflection at this point to zero? 2. What force at S is needed to cause an upward deflection at S of 5 mm? 3. Does the stress at the point of beam attachment increase or decrease by changing the load in S from 1 to 2? Please justify the answer
