Ms. Smith is a 45-year-old Hispanic mother of four who
works as a secretary in an insurance company. She has dedicated her
life to her very hectic work schedule. To cope with the stress, she
smokes heavily and consumes alcohol regularly, at least in the past
17 years. Ms. Smith has missed her last four annual physical due to
work and she only takes her diabetic and hypertension medications
anytime she remembers rather than complying on the daily
prescription. She is also concerned about her 40lbs weight gain
since working remotely. While at work, she suddenly experienced an
inability to move the right side of her body and noticed slurring
in her speech while calling for help. On arrival at the hospital,
her blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels were dangerously
elevated. The emergency physician noted slurring of speech,
weakness and loss of sensation on the right side of the body, and
an altered consciousness.
