Instructions 1. Read the scenario description below. 2. Answer both of the following questions. 1. How might the humanitarian misconception (or therapeutic misconception) arise with this study design? Assuming the IRB does not approve this research in its present form, what alterations would you suggest to make it more ethically acceptable? 2. Describe how research occurring in well-resourced settings like at OSU Hospitals could have similar types of ethical issues. Include an example (even hypothetical) of how you could see these sorts of ethical issues arising. Be specific when giving the example. Description An international team of health care professionals visits a very poor, rural area, recently struck by a devastating earthquake. They are taking part in the international humanitarian relief operations. Within the team is a group of health care professionals who conduct research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They have submitted a research protocol to their home IRB seeking ethical approval for a research study on the population struck by the earthquake. They plan to use PTSD questionnaires and personal interviews. They have used these questionnaires and interview-templates several times before, but only on subjects coming from 'first-world countries'. Due to the devastation caused by the disaster, the interviews and questionnaires will be conducted in a dedicated room within an ill-equipped field hospital where medical care is being provided as well. They propose recruiting participants from the group of patients who are seeking medical care in the field hospital.
