Synthesis of Camphor using Oxone Camphor is one of the first natural terpene products isolated from nature and is found in a variety of plant sources, including the camphor tree found in Asia. Camphor is used in a variety of products including cough suppressants, anesthetics, embalming fluid, moth repellant, and as a pharmaceutical preservative. Traditionally, camphor has been prepared using chromium based reagents, which are carcinogenic and corrosive, in addition to being extremely harmful to the environment. The salts produced in the reaction using Oxone as an oxidant are environmentally safe and are low in health and safety hazards.
