16) A furnace is used in conjunction with a boiler to generate steam and electricity. Methane at 25°C is used as the fuel entering the furnace. Air is also added at 10.0% excess and preheated to 100°C. Ninety percent of the methane fed is consumed, the product gas contains 10.0 mole CO2/mol CO, and the combustion products leave the furnace at 400°C. For a basis of 1,000 mol CH4 fed/s, 1) calculate the flowrates for inlet and outlet species and 2) set up the equations and indicate the steps required to calculate the heat transfer rate from the furnace. Indicate if the following changes will increase or decrease the rate of heat transfer (assume the fuel feed rate and the fractional conversion of methane remain constant). Briefly explain your answers. A)Increasing the temperature of the inlet air. B) Increasing the selectivity of CO2 to CO formation in the furnace.
