Question 6 A soil profile consists of 7 m thick sand above a 4 m thick soft clay which sits on impermeable rock. The void ratio of the sand is 0.6. Groundwater level (GWL) is at 3 m below the ground surface. It is estimated that the sand at 2m above the groundwater level is saturated due to capillary rise, as shown in Figure 6. The remaining sand layer above the groundwater level is unsaturated with the degree of saturation of 90%. The water content of the soft clay is 40%. a) Determine the vertical effective stresses at A, B and C. [6 marks] b) If the lateral earth pressure coefficient K, is 0.5, determine the lateral total stresses at A, B and C. [3 marks] c) Several samples are taken from the soft clay layer for standard oedometer tests, which reveal that the time for 90% consolidation on a 20 mm thick sample occurs in 40 minutes. How long will it take for 50% consolidation to occur in the soft clay layer if an office building is constructed at the top of the sand layer?
