216 NOTES 3. As a children's medicine, Tylenol has a major marketing advantage over aspirin: Liquid Tylenol preparations (essentially, Tylenol dissolved in flavored water) are stable, whereas comparable aspirin
solutions are not. Aspirin has a phenyl ester func- tionality. When this ester bond is subjected to water for prolonged periods of time, it hydrolyzes to the carboxylic acid and a phenol derivative. Write the structures of all products. 4. Pure aspirin has a melting point of 135-136°C. If aspirin crystals were not completely dried before the m.p. was determined, what effect could this have on the observed melting point? 5. Sketch the setup for a vacuum filtration of isolated crystals after extraction from an analgesic drug. Label all parts.
